The Department of Microbiology and related disciplines at Muthayammal Memorial College of Arts and Science has actively engaged in a variety of educational, research, and community-based activities throughout the year. These activities aim to enhance academic knowledge, foster industry connections, and promote awareness on important environmental and health issues. Below are the key events and activities organized by the department:
1. Institute Visit – Pasteur Institute of India, Opposite to Sim’s Park, Kotagiri Road, Coonoor – 643 103.(12th July 2024)
The department organized an educational tour to the Pasteur Institute in Conoor. The visit provided valuable insights into ongoing research activities, and participants had the opportunity to interact with research officers and scholars across various sections of the institute. It was an enriching experience for the students and faculty alike.
2. World Nature Conservation Day & International Day Celebration at Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti, Trichy Dt (29th July 2024)
In celebration of World Nature Conservation Day and International Day, the department participated in a presentation competition. The students showcased their research and awareness on environmental conservation, winning the second prize for their presentation, which highlighted their understanding of sustainable practices.
3. National Level Workshop on Microtechniques at Muthayammal Memorial College (12th August 2024)
A one-day national workshop was conducted on the recent advancements in microtechniques used in phyto and microbial studies. Esteemed resource persons included Mr. Rahman Fairoze (Territory Manager, Tulip Diagnostics Pvt Ltd, Goa), Mr. R. Arun Kumar (DNA Diagnostics, Namakkal), Mrs. Krithika (Basic Medical Coding, SMC VeeHealthtek, Tiruchirapalli), and Mr. Yuvaraj (DNA Diagnostic Centre, Namakkal). The workshop provided attendees with a thorough understanding of the latest tools and techniques in microbiology and plant sciences.
4. International Microorganism Day (19th September 2024)
The department commemorated International Microorganism Day, with active participation from both faculty and students. This event was a platform to celebrate the vital role of microorganisms in various sectors such as health, industry, and the environment, promoting further research and awareness.
5. Online Webinar on Indian Plant Biodiversity (13th December 2024)
A webinar was hosted on the topic of Indian Plant Biodiversity, with Dr. D. Dhanavel, Professor of Botany at Annamalai University, serving as the resource person. The webinar explored the vast biodiversity of India, its conservation, and its significance in the ecosystem.
6. Dengue Awareness Campaign at PattanamKakaveri (14th December 2024)
The department, in collaboration with the Department of Botany, organized a community-based Dengue awareness campaign in PattanamKakaveri. The campaign aimed to educate the public on the prevention of dengue, providing essential information on maintaining cleanliness and understanding mosquito breeding grounds.
7. Industrial Visit to Naga Food Industry, Dindigul (18th December 2024)
Students were taken on an industrial visit to Naga Food Industry in Dindigul, where they gained practical exposure to food quality control processes. The visit highlighted the role of microbiology in the food industry, particularly in ensuring the safety and quality of food products.
8. Workshop on Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Azolla and Mushroom Cultivation (8th February 2025)
The department organized a one-day workshop focusing on entrepreneurial opportunities in Azolla and mushroom cultivation. Dr. S. Sudhakar, CTO of Global Green Farms and Foods, shared his expertise on these sustainable agricultural practices, inspiring students and faculty to explore the potential for entrepreneurship in the agro-based industry.
